The Cedar Shaker Cyclocross race at Revelstoke Mountain Resort returns for its fifth year on October 21, 2018.

Cyclocross is almost as fun watching as it is participating. For those not familiar with the sport, it involves riding something similar to a road bike but with knobby tires and cables that are routed on the upper side of the top tube so the rider can carry the bike comfortably. This is important because aside from time on the bike, athletes also have to quickly dismount, sling the bikes over their shoulders, and run through and over various obstacles from hurdles to giant puddles.

The Cedar Shaker Cyclocross event will offer all that and more.

Part of the BC Interior Cyclocross Series, the Cedar Shaker Cyclocross race has been held at Revelstoke Mountain Resort since 2014 and has increased in

popularity ever since that year when 45 participants took part. This year offers the following categories:

  • Mens and Womens Elite
  • Mens Masters (40+)
  • Mens and Womens Intermediate
  • Mens and Womens Novice
  • Mens and Women’s Single Speed
  • Junior under 19
  • Junior under 17
  • Junior under 15
  • Junior under 13
  • Kids under 12

As with years past, racers will have to climb a technical gravel section on the course, located in the base village of the resort, and then zig-zag their way through the rest of the track, which ranges from two to three kilometres.

The first cyclocross race in 2014 attracted 45 participants. Organizer Mike Welch is hoping to attract 70 to 80 racers from B.C., perhaps Alberta and beyond. In the elite cyclocross category, racers ride laps for 50 minutes.

Mountain bikes are allowed in the open categories, and local mtb riders are invited to come out and give it a try. Registration is between 9-11am and and cyclocross races are at 10:30, 11:45 and 12:30. Adult registration costs $25 each and riders must have Cycling BC race insurance to participate. Insurance can be purchased on event day for only $10. Kids under 12 years old are welcome to join the race for free!
