Thirteen-year-old Canadian surfing phenom Mathea Olin slayed it at the Rip Curl Pro Surf Comp in Tofino this past week.
The home crowd were stoked to see their very own Mathea (who was recently named by the Globe and Mail as one of the top 10 Canadians under 20 to watch), win the Womens Pro/Am final and a $1,500 cheque. This latest is a series of successes for the teen who finished second in the Pro Women’s category of Rip Curl Pro Tofino last year and who also reached the quarter-finals in the under-18 division of the World Junior Surfing Championship in Oceanside, California.
American Kevin Schulz took home top honours and the $5,000 prize in the event’s Mens Pro Final while 6-time RC Pro Tofino champion, Peter Devries, came in second, securing the title as Canadian National Champ. “This is the biggest win I’ve ever had,” said Schulz of the comp, “Especially an event with an international field. This is a big scale contest, and the biggest win of my life.”
Other Canadians who won their divisions include Sean Forrester who took the Boy’s 18/U final, Leah Oke in won the Longboard division and Ben Murphy in the Masters 35+ division. As for the popular Monster Expression Session, American Noah Wegrich won for performing a sick air reverse.
The weather in Cox Bay, Tofino, was excellent for the three-day event and included chest-high waves for the competitors. All told, the winners took home over $25,000 in prizes. For a full list of the winners, check out Rip Curl’s standings page and to see a video recap, check out the flick below.
