As the world gets busier, people move faster and the memory of “the good ‘ol days” seems to slip away, it’s good to know there are still some places where we can escape the race. Take Baldy Mt Ski Resort for example. In this age of mega-resorts that place more value on real estate than turns, the South Okanagan’s Mt Baldy has stayed true to its roots. With virtually no lift lines and a friendly atmosphere that comes with being part of a small local community, this mountain located on McKinney Road between Oliver and east of Osoyoos, is well worth a visit for any level of snow enthusiast who’s looking for a chill mountain experience.

Here are a some facts you many never have known about the little mountain resort:

  • Mt Baldy opened in 1968 as a cat ski operation
  • Its first lift was installed in 1969 at 1,722 metres – making it the highest base altitude of any resort in Canada
  • The first two men to ride the T-bar never made it to the top – they wiped out part of the way up
  • Hard financial times hit the resort during the past decade until Vancouver-based lawyer Victor Tsao became the primary investor of the new Baldy Mountain Resort, which took ownership on July 2016
  • Over a million dollars has been invested in the hill in the past two years
  • Today Mt Baldy has two chairlifts and a magic carpet, which access 500 skiable acres of inbound alpine terrain, 80 percent of which are green beginner or blue intermediate runs
  • Above the lift access is 275 vertical metres of slackcountry, the terrain where the Slackcountry Cup was held last February
  • The resort also offers snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, fat biking, and, yes, even winter disc golf
  • A season’s pass for a child under six is $25 and for senior’s over 65, it’s only $89. Adult and youth passes are also some of the cheapest in Canada at $349 and $249 respectively
  • Free toboggan party days are held every Saturday afternoon on the hill
